Science and Humanities Department

The Science and Humanities (S&H) Department at Sriram Engineering College plays a vital role in shaping the academic foundation of all engineering students, especially during their first year.

About the Department
  • The department provides fundamental knowledge required for engineering education. It supports all branches such as Artificial Intelligence & Data Science (AI & DS), Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning (AI & ML), Computer Science and Business Systems (CSBS), Cyber Security, Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE), Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE), and Mechanical Engineering by offering core subjects in the initial semesters.
  • The subjects handled by the department include Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and English, Tamil & foreign language. These subjects help students develop analytical skills, scientific understanding, and communication abilities, thereby building a strong foundation for their respective engineering disciplines.

Sriram Engineering College celebrated its Fresher’s Day on Friday, 29th August 2025 at 11:00 a.m. in the college auditorium.

  • Guest of Honor: Mr. K. Baskaran, Chairman (IWMA) & CEO, Aathi Industries
  • Special Guest: Mr. Suresh Murugesan, Program Manager, Nokia Optics

The celebration created a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere for the first-year engineering students, who participated with great enthusiasm. They were warmly received by their seniors and faculty members, making the day a memorable start to their academic journey.

The program provided a meaningful platform for interaction, motivation, and inspiration, encouraging the newcomers to step forward with confidence, determination, and a sense of belonging at Sriram Engineering College. The Chief Guest and Guests of Honor inspired the students with their motivational words, instilling positive energy, the right attitude, and a vision to achieve success—not only in their academic pursuits but also in shaping themselves into future leaders and role models.

Two-Day National Conference on “Exploring the Pedagogy of English Language and Literature in Keeping with the AI Digital Era”

The Sriram English Literary Association (SRELA) of the Department of English, School of Sciences and Humanities, Sriram Engineering College, in association with the English Language Teachers’ Interaction Forum (ELTIF), Thalassery, Kerala, successfully organized a two-day National Conference on the theme “Exploring the Pedagogy of English Language and Literature in Keeping with the AI Digital Era” on 13 and 14 February 2026.

The inauguration ceremony was held at the Mini-Auditorium and witnessed the participation of eminent scholars from Hyderabad and Kerala. Dr. Ganesh (FYC) welcomed the gathering. The Principal, Dr. B. R. Ramesh Bapu, delivered the Presidential Address. The inaugural address was delivered by Dr. Geetha Durairajan, former Professor at the English and Foreign Languages University. Dr. P. Bhaskaran Nair, former President of ELTIF and the key inspiration behind the conference, delivered the felicitation address.

On this occasion, a booklet containing 40 abstracts was released.

The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Shree Deepa, Associate Professor, Centre for English Language Studies, University of Hyderabad. She also conducted a workshop for first-year students on the same day.

The plenary sessions were led by Dr. S. Balasubramaniam, Associate Professor, DRBCCC Hindu College, Pattabiram, and Dr. U. Thanesh of RKM Vivekananda College, Mylapore. They also chaired the offline paper presentation sessions. Around 20 papers were presented offline at the Optical Lab in the Main Block.

The online sessions were conducted at the English Language Lab and chaired by Mr. D. Suresh Kumar, Assistant Professor of English. Approximately 15 presenters participated in these sessions. Ms. Gopikha coordinated the sessions and managed the distribution of certificates to the participants.

On the second day, a workshop titled “AI as a Thinking Power: Transforming Language Teaching and Research without Outsourcing Our Minds” was conducted for second-year Computer Science students at the Net Lab by Dr. Shahir Abdul, Founder of The Smart Language.

The valedictory function was held in the afternoon. Dr. P. Bhaskaran Nair delivered the valedictory address, and Mr. D. R. Jayaraman proposed the vote of thanks.

Mr. D. G. Rajvinayak, Assistant Professor of Physics, coordinated hospitality arrangements, including lunch, tea, and refreshments for both days. Registration was managed by Mrs. Sreedevi (Chemistry) and Mrs. Priya (Mathematics). Academic coordination and audience management were overseen by Mrs. Uma Maheswari (Mathematics), Mrs. Sahila (Tamil), and Dr. Durga Devi (Physics).

The two-day national conference was successfully organized and concluded with active participation and valuable academic exchange.

FACT CHECK Sensitizing Program for First Year Students

In line with the initiative of the Tamil Nadu Government’s Fact Check Unit (FCU) to combat misinformation and disinformation, the National Service Scheme (NSS) of Sriram Engineering College organized a FACT CHECK Sensitizing Program for first-year students.

The program aimed to create awareness among students about identifying fake news, understanding verified government information, and promoting responsible use of social media platforms.

The session highlighted:

  • The objectives and functions of the Tamil Nadu Government’s Fact Check Unit (FCU)
  • The importance of verifying information before sharing
  • The role of youth in preventing the spread of misinformation

The programme was organized by the NSS Co-ordinators, Mr. D. G. Raj Vinayak and Mrs. P. Pavithra, under the guidance of our Principal Dr. B. R. Ramesh Bapu. The event successfully sensitized first-year students on digital responsibility and critical thinking in the era of social media.

Guest Lecture: "How to Get Highly Paid Jobs"

The School of Science and Humanities organized a Guest Lecture on "How to Get Highly Paid Jobs" by Dr. N. R. Shanker, Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, on 3rd November 2025.

The session was conducted at the CSE Seminar Hall, SREC, exclusively for First-Year Students. Dr. Shanker delivered an inspiring and informative talk focusing on career planning, skill development, and strategies for success in today's competitive job market. The lecture motivated students to enhance their technical and interpersonal skills to pursue highly rewarding career opportunities.

The event was well-received and proved to be highly beneficial for all participants.

Guest lecture on "An Introduction to Optical Fiber"

Sriram Engineering College organized a guest lecture on "An Introduction to Optical Fiber" at the CISCO Lab, CSE Block, for first-year students on 20th December 2024.
